Buying an Engagement Ring in Hatton Garden: What to Ask Before You Pay

Two engagement rings in Hatton Garden can look almost identical but differ substantially in diamond quality, metal, construction and aftercare. The safest comparison starts with the finished ring and full written price, not the display-window discount.

This is a ring-buying checklist, not a directory of jewellers. For the neighbourhood, types of businesses, appointments and route, start with our

Buying an Engagement Ring in Hatton Garden

The questions to ask before you pay

Is this the exact ring and stone I will receive? Or is it a sample to be remade?

Is the diamond natural or laboratory-grown? Are any treatments disclosed?

Which grading laboratory and report number? Can I independently verify it?

What are the stone’s measurements and cut details? Not only its carat weight.

Which metal and fineness? What are the band width, depth and setting height?

What is the complete VAT-inclusive price? Does it include side stones, setting, engraving and delivery?

Is the ring ready-made, made to order or bespoke? What must I approve before manufacture?

What happens if I change my mind, the ring does not fit or delivery is late? Get the applicable terms in writing.

Who handles resizing, inspections and repairs after collection? What is included and what costs extra?

Rule of thumb: take away two or three quotes with comparable specifications and review them outside the showroom. You do not have to commit on the first visit.

Set a brief before visiting

Decide a maximum all-in budget, natural versus lab-grown diamond (or whether you want to see both), preferred shape, metal colour, expected ring size and your real deadline. Mention everyday concerns: gloves, hands-on work, snagging, low settings or a future wedding band. Bring two reference photos. If the size or style is a surprise, ask about sizing and exchanges before ordering.

Ask the jeweller to quote the same brief. Comparing a loose diamond at one shop with a completed platinum ring at another tells you little about value.

How to compare engagement-ring diamonds

The four Cs — cut, colour, clarity and carat — organise the discussion, but they are not a substitute for seeing the actual stone. Carat measures weight, not visible diameter; check the millimetre dimensions. For round brilliants, compare the laboratory’s cut grade and proportions. Fancy shapes need direct visual comparison of outline, symmetry and areas of darkness.

View shortlisted diamonds away from intense display lighting, face-up and from the side. Ask whether inclusions are visible to the naked eye, whether fluorescence is reported and whether any treatments are disclosed. A higher numerical or letter grade does not guarantee that you will prefer the appearance.

How to compare engagement-ring diamonds

Natural versus lab-grown

Both are diamonds, but origin materially affects the offer. Request separate, clearly labelled quotes if comparing them. Do not assume equivalent future resale value, and do not accept “diamond” as the only origin description. Avoid treating a sales forecast about future value as a guarantee.

Check the actual grading report

Note the issuing laboratory, report number, measurements and any listed characteristics. Check the number through that laboratory’s official report-verification service, and ask to see any laser inscription where applicable. Ensure the quoted stone matches the report and later the invoice. A grading report is not an insurance valuation or warranty. Smaller stones may be sold without an individual grading report; ask exactly what documentation is included.

The setting matters as much as the headline diamond grade

Try the ring from the side as well as face-on. A high setting may catch on clothing; a very fine band can be more vulnerable to wear. Ask about claw security, the accessibility of future inspections, and whether the wedding band will sit flush. Pavé, full-eternity designs and intricate shoulders can limit resizing. Get the likely resizing range, price and turnaround confirmed.

For gold, specify 9ct, 14ct or 18ct and the precise alloy; for platinum, ask for the fineness (for example 950). White gold may require rhodium replating over time, depending on the alloy and finish. UK hallmarking rules apply to precious-metal articles subject to statutory exemptions: ask to see the appropriate hallmark and the jeweller’s Dealer’s Notice, not merely a verbal assurance.

What a proper engagement-ring quote includes

Ask each jeweller for one itemised quote that identifies the finished ring. Use this checklist side by side:

Seller’s trading name and contact details; exact ring or design reference.

Diamond origin, shape, carat, colour, clarity, relevant cut information, report issuer and report number (if supplied).

Metal, fineness, ring size, band dimensions, setting and side-stone specifications.

Total price including VAT, design work, setting, hallmarking, engraving, delivery and any first resize; exclusions clearly listed.

Deposit and stage payments, design-approval milestones, expected delivery date and response if delayed.

Cancellation, returns, sizing, manufacturing defects and aftercare terms.

If one quote is much cheaper, identify which specification or service changed. A discount from an unexplained original price is not proof of better value.

Ready-made, made to order or bespoke: know the commitment

Ready-made means an existing ring; confirm that the display item is the one sold. Made to order usually uses an existing design in your chosen specifications. Bespoke involves a design developed for you: ask which drawings or CAD renders you approve, how many revisions are included, and when manufacture begins.

For an in-store purchase, there is generally no automatic refund just because you change your mind. Online and other distance purchases often have cancellation rights, but genuine personalised or made-to-specification goods can be exceptions. Not every “made-to-order” label automatically proves an exception; the facts of the order matter. Your statutory rights for faulty, misdescribed or otherwise non-conforming goods are separate.

Before any deposit: obtain the specifications, cancellation terms, what portion of the deposit is refundable at each stage, and what happens if a particular stone becomes unavailable. Ask for the promised completion date and whether it is an estimate or an agreed deadline. Keep invoices, CAD approvals and correspondence.

For eligible purchases where the cash price is over £100 and no more than £30,000, paying at least part by a qualifying credit card may give Section 75 protection if the legal conditions are met. It is not an automatic guarantee of a refund.

What to inspect before collecting your ring hatton garden jewellery

What to inspect before collecting your ring

Compare the delivered stone and ring to the approved specification, invoice and grading report.

Check fit, comfort, symmetry, finish and that claws are even and do not snag; raise any concern before leaving.

Check the hallmark where legally required and keep all reports and written care instructions.

Ask how to arrange the first resize, routine setting checks, cleaning, repairs and any warranty claim.

Consider insurance based on appropriate cover and replacement costs, not assumptions about resale value.

Hatton Garden engagement rings: quick answers

Is Hatton Garden cheaper for engagement rings?

Not necessarily. Its concentration of jewellers makes comparing like-for-like quotations practical, but quality, specification, service and price vary. Compare the total price, not just a headline discount.

Do I need an appointment?

Many street-level showrooms welcome browsers, but book in advance if you want to view specific stones or discuss a bespoke commission. Check the individual business’s hours and address.

How long does a bespoke engagement ring take?

It depends on stone sourcing, design approvals, manufacture, hallmarking and potential alterations. Get a written expected date and ask what happens if your proposal or travel date is fixed.

Can I return a bespoke engagement ring?

Change-of-mind rights depend on the sale method and whether the ring is genuinely personalised or made to your specifications. A retailer’s wording does not cancel statutory rights for faulty or misdescribed goods. Read the specific terms before placing the order.

What if I do not know my partner’s ring size?

Ask about a temporary proposal ring, a resizable design or the exact resize and exchange terms. Designs with stones around the band may be more difficult to alter.
